課程概述

This course will help prepare students to equip with psychology and communication skills in presenting or applying for positions in Western contexts or conference/publication outlets in the fields of health and behavioral sciences and other related professional disciplines. The course will have a focus on the skills which may be particularly useful for those who are interested in becoming a professional in health and behavioral sciences, but the skills will be relevant for other related fields too. 

課程目標
At the end of the course the students are expected to:
1. Apply psychological skills to prepare students to submit their work in Western contexts for publication or presentation consideration.
2. Utilize psychological tools to increase the ability to communicate via professional correspondences (e.g., cover letters and emails) and CVs.
3. Gain psychological concepts to enhance job interview skills for Westernized settings.
4. Describe the basic theories, concepts, and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines that are used in public health research and practice (HBCS-B)
5. Analyze domestic and international issues about health and the environment from a socio-behavioral perspective (HBCS-E) 
課程要求
Students are expected to:
• Be enthusiastic about learning the subject and participating in lectures and discussions.
• No prior knowledge is required.
• Read assigned readings (i.e. ‘Designated readings’ in the below) before the class.
Students will need to:
(1) Demonstrate the ability to apply psychological concepts by submitting a succinct communication in the form of an abstract (350-500 words in English) based on any topics in the fields of social and behavioral sciences and other related professional disciplines as a written assignment to the TA by 11:59pm Thursday, June 29, 2023. The abstract can be based on any of your scientific projects to be or already conducted; it should be prepared in a structured format (i.e. Background, Methods, (expected) Results, and Conclusions (or Implications for projects yet to be conducted)); and
(2) Display the proficiency of employing psychological exercises to convey concepts with confidence by submitting a PowerPoint presentation (5 slides in English) based on the submitted abstract to the TA by 11:59pm Thursday, June 29, 2023.
In the class, the students are expected to:
(1) actively participate in small group discussions and the plenary discussion;
(2) communicate with professionalism by writing a cover letter for publication or job search as a written assignment;
(3) convey experiences with confidence by submitting a curriculum vita as a written assignment; and
(4) demonstrate verbal communication skills by giving a presentation based on PowerPoint slides submitted before the class (5 slides in 5 to 6 minutes).
